Videography is one of those things that everyone thinks they can do. We all can shoot videos with our phones, and anyone can upload videos to YouTube. Once they’re uploaded, they’ll go viral and Netflix will write us a check to make our own show. It’s as easy as that, right? I wish.
A quick look at that video on your phone and you realize Netflix isn’t calling anytime soon. It’s not quite as polished as you thought it would be. Maybe you do need to think about lighting, editing, microphones, color scopes, frame rates, shooting angle. And then there’s licensing, fundraising, marketing, contracts. What does that process even look like?
I’ve been there. I am there. I’ve spent time learning the technical skills. I have all of the professional equipment. I’ve shot weddings and parties, done corporate promotional filming, made television and internet commercials, produced custom graphic animation, and even real estate promos. Now, I want to continue to grow my repertoire and create more personal, creative content. So, I’m starting a new project—First 15.
Fifteen Films - One Goal
First 15 will be my shot at making my first short films. I know that if I want to be a filmmaker, I need to make films. With First 15, I’ll be working hard and churning out content. I know they might not all win academy awards—they might not even all be watchable—but I know that to reach my filmmaking goals I’ll need to be willing to take some risks, maybe make some bad films, and learn a lot.
I want to take you on the journey with me. Through this blog I’ll chronicle each step of the process—from developing a story, writing a script, shooting, and pitching to a studio. I’ll tell you what I do right, where I fell on my face, and what you can learn from it all. I’ll also offer professional lessons and tips I’ve learned through my video production career thus far. So, whether you want to learn how to produce better videos, you’re looking to hire someone to film your next commercial, or you’re just interested in seeing if I make it, I hope you’ll subscribe to my blog and follow my work to make my First 15.
